Further investigating the formal, psychological, and phenomenological responses to space in two and three dimensions, Sophie Lee presents a new body of work titled, “Object Relations.” 

Each work is comprised of three components: a collaged painting, a sculpture, and a shelf connecting the two. This triangulated composition interrogates the space of the painted panel, the space between the sculpture and the two dimensional work, as well as the space of the viewer and the interaction of the viewer to the objects. This layered experience is meant to make explicit the act of viewing art objects, their relationship to each other and our relationship to them. The oversized shelf directly in front of the painting determines the way in which the piece can be viewed. We can stand in front of it, but only from a distance, and there’s a sculpture in our line of sight. Our desire to see must be navigated spatially as we maneuver around the display. The sculpture and the painting are dependent on each other; two components of the same piece separated yet connected in our visual field. Working within the language of abstraction, the pieces ask us to consider how visual meaning is made through a myriad of spatial relationships. 

Sophie Lee has a BA from Mills College and an MFA from the University of California, Irvine. Her work has recently been included in exhibitions at Human Resources, Los Angeles; The Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena; and Beacon Arts Building, Inglewood. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
